UAV-RTEMS is a project under the Technology Transfer Proposal initiative of the European Space Agency (ESA) designed to encourage the reuse of space technology in other sectors. Orbital Critical Systems is one of the seven European companies selected for a technology transfer Demonstrator.
Specifically, the real-time operating system RTEMS, widely used in space missions, was selected as a potential technology to use in the field of avionics (embedded, critical software). A certifiable version of the operating system was used on its own LEON-3-based hardware platform to host a ground-based Health Monitoring application, typically used in the unmanned aircraft (UAV) sector. It was implemented in an ad-hoc manner according to the certification standard DO- 178B and uses a graphical display compatible with the ARINC-661 standard. The demonstrator uses a telemetry simulation of a real STANAG-4586, very similar to that used by fully operational aircraft such as the ATLANTE UAV.
